 When I’m not helping the owners and directors of smaller enterprises to run their businesses well I spend some of my time trying to get a fair deal for local people from local government. I am, in fact, an elected councillor! And in common with all councils the one on which I serve is grappling with the need to cut expenditure as the UK does its best to get itself into shape following the recent, and continuing, financial crisis. It seems natural when we need to make a choice to choose the option which is the best according to some criterion. That’s not always appropriate as Goldilocks found out because the best, or the worst, doesn’t always give you the balance of benefits for which you look.
